What is the Keto Diet?

The ketogenic diet burst onto the scene in the past few years. It’s a low carbohydrate, high fat diet that enables your body to enter ketosis.

While you’re in ketosis your body moves away from its usual primary fuel source (carbohydrates), and starts burning fat instead. In order to reach the state of ketosis you need to limit your consumption of carbs to 50 grams or less for several days in a row.

How to Choose Your Keto Meal Kit

Choosing a regular meal delivery kit in Montreal can be a daunting task for the average person because there are so many options to choose from (which is actually why I create these handy little writeups!). But ketogenic diet meal kits are a bit of a different story because there are far fewer options (currently!) available.

That said, here’s how to choose your keto meal kit so you can avoid grocery shopping.

Scan for ‘Keto’ or ‘Low carb’

It’s not always available, but some providers clearly mark “keto” next to keto-friendly menu options. Failing that, look for “low carb” options. Which is a lot more common.

If the company doesn’t label any of their meals with ‘keto’ or ‘low carb’ then they probably won’t work well for you. But you can still try looking at the nutritional information to be sure, and make substitutions where possible.

Watch for dietary restrictions

If you have any special dietary restrictions, you need to be mindful when choosing a keto meal kit delivery service. Some of them will accommodate your requirements, but most won’t. You can usually find this information in their FAQ under ‘allergies’ or ‘dietary requests.’

Ingredients

You need to make sure the keto package matches your standards for quality ingredients. Some things to watch out for are: organic, local, non-GMO, free range, and so on.

Variety

Variety is especially challenging for keto folks. Some meal delivery kit services might only offer a few options (we’ll get into the keto meal kit with the most variety below). In addition to a diverse menu, you may want to look for keto meal kits that offer easy meals and simple recipe directions—especially if you’re a beginner cook or just getting into the keto lifestyle.

Confirm Delivery Region

There are a number of Quebec meal kits that are weirdly vague about where they deliver. So make sure to always confirm—especially if you live in the city outskirts.

Delivery Dates

The bigger companies tend to deliver every day of the week. But the smaller companies generally have specific dates and times they can deliver. Make sure you also confirm whether you need to be present for delivery.

Sustainability

Meal delivery kits reduce food waste, but the packaging can be wasteful. Having said this, many companies have made huge improvements towards lowering their carbon footprint. You can generally find this information in the FAQ, but lots of companies proudly display it on their homepage.

Now that you know what to look for when choosing a keto meal kit, here are my favourite keto meal kit delivery services.

Livefit

LiveFit Keto Chicken Carbonara

LiveFit Chicken Carbonara

LiveFit is a wonderful Canadian meal delivery service option for a healthy keto lifestyle because they have lots of variety and meal plans specifically tailored for keto diets. They even have a ‘keto cleanse’ with curated meals that make it easier for people to digest their proteins and fats.

LiveFit is big on providing nutrient rich healthy meals. But not everything is exactly healthy—I’m looking at you keto cheesy bagels—they do look yummy, though!
Folks in Montreal can get their meals delivered on Tuesdays and Thursdays. With turnaround times of as little as 24 hours—now that’s fresh!

LiveFit is also a solid option if you live in a household that doesn’t eat the same diet. They have a diverse range of diet-friendly options including vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free.

Price per plate:

  • $8 to $12

Notable features:

  • You can get 10% off when you subscribe to a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly package.
  • New subscribers can take an additional $25 off their order.
  • Shipping starts at $7.95.
  • There’s an option to order select grocery and produce items. But make sure to read those labels!

Pros: LiveFit has a variety of meal packages specifically for keto dieters. They have a commendable commitment to natural, whole food ingredients. And they clearly want to help subscribers live and eat healthier.

Cons: They have little to no ability to modify meals. If you have an allergy, they recommend reaching out first before you proceed with your order. LiveFit’s packaging is on the wasteful side.

HulkMeal

HulkMeal Keto

HulkMeal Broccoli and Beef Meatballs

HulkMeal is a Montreal based meal delivery service that specializes in readymade meals with keto options. They’re relatively unique in that they don’t have a subscription based model and they deliver every single day of the week—even Sundays.

In addition to a variety of keto friendly frozen meals, they have an impressive selection of snacks and drinks that look to die for.

Hulkmeal is geared towards athletes so they come in a good portion size. And they clearly pride themselves on delivering delicious meals with quality ingredients. They’ve got lots of rave reviews on Google and social media to back it up.

Price per plate:

  • $10.99 to $12.99

Notable features:

  • Delivery starts at $9.99.
  • They offer free shipping on all orders over $99.
  • Next day delivery is available.
  • No subscription necessary.

Pros: They deliver every day of the week and you don’t need to be home to receive the delivery. They have a wonderful selection of snacks and drinks outside of their standard meals and solid portion sizes.

Cons: It’s not clear whether accommodations can be made for allergies or whether modifications can be made in general. There’s a limited amount of keto-friendly options and they don’t have keto-friendly breakfast options.

HelloFresh

HelloFresh Keto Chicken Florentine

HelloFresh Carb Smart Chicken Florentine

I get this question a lot: “Does HelloFresh do Keto?”

I’m afraid the answer is no. HelloFresh has lots of tasty recipes, but none of them perfectly fit the keto diet. I’ve included them in this list, however, because they offer a ‘Carb Smart’ menu with meals that contain fewer than 50g of carbohydrates. So while their meals aren’t totally keto-friendly, you could restrict carbs throughout the day, and/or portion out your meal over multiple meals to make this a viable option for you.

Another way to ‘keto-ify’ HelloFresh is to remove certain ingredients because all of their meals are meant to cook at home (as opposed to ready made/frozen).

If you have other dietary restrictions you need to be mindful of, then removing certain ingredients from the recipe may work as well, because HelloFresh itself won’t modify their meals for allergies or intolerances.

Price per plate:

  • $9.69 – $11.49

Notable features:

  • Shipping costs $6.99 to $9.99 per box.
  • You can get $50 off and free shipping on your first order.
  • HelloFresh is carbon neutral.

Pros: Convenient and flexible delivery options. They adhere to the Clean15 rule for their ingredients and they’re a sustainability oriented, carbon neutral company.

Cons: If you’re strictly keto, then HelloFresh might not be suitable. Also the Carb Smart option only allows for 2 options per week so you need to be ok with some repetition.

MealPro

MealPro Keto Cajun Chicken

MealPro Cajun Chicken

MealPro isn’t as well known as some of the classic Canadian meal delivery services. It’s based in the U.S. and recently became available in Canada. Including—you guessed it—Montreal.
They don’t have a specific keto diet meal plan, but they clearly label which options are keto-friendly.

What’s great about MealPro is their commitment to natural, GMO-free ingredients, and that they go the extra mile to prepare food in a way that optimizes retention. They also allow you to customize your nutrition and portion sizing.

There’s no need to subscribe, but you need a minimum order of 18 meals. If you do choose to subscribe, you have the option of ordering on a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly basis. Their meals are ready made and frozen.

Price per plate:

  • USD$9.99 to USD$14.99

Notable features:

  • Delivery costs USD$99.99.
  • No subscription necessary.
  • Customizable nutrition and portion sizes.
  • They are a Carbon Neutral company.

Pros: We love their commitment to natural food and sustainability. MealPro uses recycled packaging—a lot of which can be recycled. And they’re proudly carbon neutral.

Cons: The exchange rate and shipping cost make MealPro an expensive option. They have a limited keto selection.

Goodfood

Goodfood Keto Walnut and Spinach Stuffed Pork Chops

Goodfood Walnut and Spinach Stuffed Pork Chops

If you’re currently keto-curious or looking for a relatively low carbohydrate option, then Goodfood has a lovely ready-to-cook option for you. ‘Clean15’ is their low carb option that gives you fresh, precisely portioned ingredients for you to cook on your own time.

Each order comes with easy to follow recipes and instructions to help you cut down on cooking and meal planning time. Good stuff for busy people.

Fun fact: Goodfood is based in Montreal!

Price per plate:

  • $9.36 to $13.15

Notable features:

  • They offer free shipping.
  • Ready to cook.
  • New subscribers can enjoy $100 off their first order.

Pros: Goodfood is quite a bit cheaper than any of the keto options on this list because you do the cooking yourself.

Cons: If you require strict keto options or you’re trying to skip meal prep altogether then Goodfood isn’t a good choice.

Conclusion

Following the keto diet can seem limiting. But the good news for you Montrealers is that there are multiple meal kit services that provide for your needs. If you follow keto strictly, then my recommendation is to go with either Livefit or Hulkmeal as they provide the most options—catered specifically to the ketogenic dieters. That said, you can still make any of these options work for you.
