The Best Keto Meal Kits in Edmonton: 5 to Try in 2021

Written by: Natalia S
Natalia I’m a Vancouver-based mom and writer who loves to cook. Hope you enjoy!

Edmonton has a variety of restaurant options for those following a ketogenic diet, which makes reaching and maintaining a state of ketosis much easier! But what about at home? Keeping up with a ketogenic diet can be difficult when you have to cook for yourself. The temptation to heat up a frozen pizza on those busy days is far too real. Enter meal kits!

Meal kits are the best way to stay on track with any diet and cook yourself easy, restaurant-quality, healthy meals from the comfort of your own kitchen. But some of the best keto meal kit companies do not deliver to Edmonton and some of the best meal kit companies in Edmonton do not offer keto meals.

As a solution to this problem, I’ve rounded up the top keto-specific meal kit and meal prep companies that deliver to Edmonton and surrounding areas.

What is a keto diet?

A ketogenic diet (otherwise known as keto) is a low-carb, high-fat diet. This type of eating allows your body to reach a state of ketosis. This is when your body doesn’t have enough carbohydrates to burn for energy so instead, it burns fat. To reach ketosis, you must limit your carbohydrate intake to 50 grams or less for two to seven days.

What To Look For When Choosing A Keto Meal Kit

  • Look for a company that offers keto-specific or low carbohydrate meals. If they are low carb, be sure to check the carbohydrate value for each meal before ordering.
  • Check to see if they meet all of your dietary requirements in addition to being keto-friendly. For example, if you are lactose intolerant or have allergies, are they able to accommodate your needs?
  • Take a look at their ingredients. Do they meet your standards? For example, do you value organic or locally sourced ingredients?
  • Inspect the portion sizes. Will you have enough to feel full and will you have any leftovers?
  • Notice the menu selection. Is there enough variety in their menu that you will be excited to eat what you have ordered?
  • Check to see if they deliver in your area. Many of the meal delivery companies on this list deliver to Edmonton and the immediate area but some of the surrounding areas may be limited.
  • Look for their delivery dates and times. Do they work for your routine and schedule?
  • Watch for pricing. Does the price fit your budget? Don’t forget to factor in tax and shipping costs.

HelloFresh

Savoury Smoky Pork Chops with Tangy Apple Slaw and Asparagus from HelloFresh

Savoury Smoky Pork Chops with Tangy Apple Slaw and Asparagus from HelloFresh

Does HelloFresh offer Keto meals?

HelloFresh does not market itself as carrying keto-specific meals, however, they do offer a Carb Smart menu with meals under 50 grams of carbohydrates. Eating one of HelloFresh’s Carb Smart meals per day while restricting carbs in all other meals could work for someone following a ketogenic diet!

Variety

HelloFresh usually only offers two Carb Smart meals per week, so if you’re okay with a little meal repetition, they might be the meal kit service for you!

Ingredients

HelloFresh follows the Clean 15 rule in their meal kit boxes—something that I enjoy about the company. For those not familiar with the Clean 15 rule, there are a group of 15 fruits and vegetables that are less susceptible to pesticides, including onions, cauliflower, and broccoli, among others. Although HelloFresh attempts to source organic produce for their meal kits, many of their boxes include Clean 15 ingredients as well.

Allergies & Intolerances

Unfortunately, HelloFresh cannot accommodate certain allergies or intolerances but their ingredients are all individually packaged so removing certain ingredients is very easy. Keep in mind that they cannot guarantee their ingredients are completely free from cross-contamination.

Cost

You can expect to pay about $9.69 per plate and between $6.99 and $7.99 per box in shipping costs.

Delivery

Edmonton and surrounding area delivery dates will vary based on postal code. Delivery times are between 8 AM to 8 PM.

Goodfood

Buddha Bowl from GoodFood

Buddha Bowl from GoodFood

Similar to HelloFresh, Goodfood is another meal kit company that does not market itself as carrying Keto meals. Instead, they offer their own low-carb menu called Clean 15. You will occasionally find keto-specific recipes on their site like these Keto Walnut Spinach Stuffed Pork Chops but overall, their focus is to keep their low carb options under 50 grams each.

This approach can be difficult to navigate during the ordering process since some of their low-carb dishes are still slightly over the recommended 50 grams of carbohydrates for a keto diet. Be sure to check the nutritional value of each meal before you add it to your cart!

Variety

Goodfood’s menu rotates weekly. Their Clean 15 menu offers an average of 10 low-carb dishes each week so there is plenty to choose from!

Ingredients

Goodfood prioritizes ingredients without additives or preservatives and ensures that their meat and fish come from eco-responsible sources. As a Canadian company, they try to source ingredients and pack their boxes locally when possible. Seasonality can make this difficult but at the very least, they guarantee at least 85% of the contents of every box are sourced from Canadian farms and local businesses or packaged in Canada.

Allergies & Intolerances

Goodfood cannot modify any of their meals but since the ingredients are pre-portioned in individual packages, anyone with an allergy or intolerance is able to easily swap out ingredients before assembling their meal. Their boxes are packaged in the same processing facility though, which means they cannot guarantee zero cross-contamination. Anyone with severe allergies is not recommended to order from Goodfood.

Cost

You can expect to pay about $11.87 per plate for their Classic Basket option which covers 3 meals per week for 2 people. Shipping is free.

Delivery

Goodfood has a wide range of delivery options. They deliver to Edmonton every day except Saturdays. For residential addresses, the delivery timeframe is between 7 AM and 8 PM, and for business addresses, it’s between 9 AM and 5 PM. Some addresses may qualify for after-hours deliveries between 6 PM and 10 PM, but you won’t know if your address qualifies for their Afterhours program until you plug it into your account.

Do any meal kit delivery services offer premade Keto meals?

Yes! I’ve also included a list of the best meal prep delivery services that offer premade keto meals to Edmontonians:

LiveFit Foods

Herbed Tuscan Power Bowl from LiveFit Foods

Herbed Tuscan Power Bowl from LiveFit Foods

One of the more extensive keto menus on this list, LiveFit Foods is a meal delivery service that offers ready-to-eat keto meals. Every week, you can expect to find 24 keto dishes on their menu to choose from. The only downside is that they do not rotate these menu items often.

LiveFit Foods offer lunch and dinner options, but some meals could be eaten for breakfast—like their Cheesy Bagels or Zucchini Cheddar Scones! They also offer a Keto Cleanse package that includes lunches, dinners, and soups. Each order of their Keto Cleanse will last you one week.

Ingredients

LiveFit Foods does not use organic or locally sourced ingredients. Their focus, however, is on meals that are made from whole foods and not including any ingredients that would be considered “empty calories”.

Allergies & Intolerances

LiveFit Foods cannot accommodate any modifications to meals or packages. Since the meals are pre-packaged this could be a problem for those with intolerances or severe allergies.

Cost

You can expect to pay about $9.95 per plate. The lowest shipping cost is $7.95 on orders over $200. Shipping costs go up marginally if your order is under $200.

LiveFit also offers a discount program called Subscribe n’ Save which offers free shipping and 10% off all orders. To qualify for this program you have to have a minimum of 14 meals in your cart and allow LiveFit to do the ordering for you for the remaining orders. This can be a bi-weekly or monthly subscription but note that it does not apply to those doing their Keto Cleanse.

Delivery

LiveFit Foods delivers to Edmonton and surrounding areas on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 8 AM and 8 PM.

MealKraft

Chipotle Caesar Salad from MealKraft

Chipotle Caesar Salad from MealKraft

MealKraft is a locally-owned meal delivery service that offers keto dishes to Edmontonians and those who live in surrounding areas. One cool feature MealKraft offers is their Nutrition Calculator on their website. It adds up as you order your food so you can see exactly how many calories, sugars, proteins, fats, carbs, and sodium you’ll be consuming in total.

Variety

MealKraft is not exclusive to keto meals but they do offer a nice variety of keto-specific meal options. While these are mostly lunch and dinner items, they do have some healthy snacks sprinkled in as well. They rotate select menu items bi-weekly and over time you will see all of them rotate in and out.

Ingredients

MealKraft focuses on creating healthy meals with natural and fresh ingredients that are sourced from sustainable suppliers in and around Edmonton.

Allergies & Intolerances

Dietary restrictions can be accommodated by MealKraft. During checkout, simply note your allergies or intolerances and MealKraft will do what they can to ensure your meals are prepared without certain ingredients. Like other companies on this list, they can’t guarantee 100% that there will be no cross-contamination since all of their ingredients are housed in the same kitchen.

Cost

For a standard serving size of 4 to 4.5 ounces of protein, 1 cup vegetables, and 1 cup starch, you can expect to pay $13.50 per plate. Protein serving size is adjustable by 1 ounce or 2 ounces, which will reflect in the price. Shipping is $10-$20, depending on your order value.

Delivery

Deliveries are made on Sundays and Wednesdays between 3 PM and 6 PM, and you can split your order into two delivery dates—a feature unique to MealKraft. If your order exceeds $120, they’ll waive one of the delivery fees in a split delivery and you can request which meals arrive first at checkout.

Bite Me

Blackened Salmon Succotash from Bite Me

Blackened Salmon Succotash from Bite Me

Bite Me is another locally-owned meal delivery service in Edmonton. They offer ready-to-eat keto meals to fitness-focused Edmontonians and those in surrounding areas.

Variety

Bite Me keeps about nine keto dishes in rotation for its customers to choose from. They also give you an option to add carbohydrates like rice or potatoes if you choose.

Ingredients

Bite Me focuses on using quality ingredients and whole foods. They use organic products when they are available, but you will not find these in all of your Bite Me meals each time.

Allergies & Intolerances

Bite Me gives customers an option to notify them of allergies at checkout.

Cost

When ordering from Bite Me, you can expect meals to cost around $13.30 per plate with both pickup and delivery options for their Edmonton customers. Pick up requires a minimum of $60 order, and for delivery, it’s a minimum order of $75.

They also offer discounts on bulk orders. Receive 5% off 30 meals or more and 10% off 60 meals or more. The coupon codes for these discounts are available to anyone at checkout.

Bite Me’s delivery fee is a flat $10 for every order.

Delivery & Pickup

Pick up is between 4 PM and 5:30 PM from Sunday to Friday at their St. Albert location, and delivery is between 5 PM and 9 PM from Sunday to Friday to all of Edmonton and most surrounding areas.

Other Keto Meal Prep Options

If the options above don’t appeal to you, have a look at Easy as Pie and Gourmet Prep. They are local meal kit companies that also offer keto meals to Edmonton and surrounding areas. Chef’s Plate also carries keto-friendly dishes from time to time but you have to check the carbohydrate content which is sometimes over the 50-gram limit.

Keto Grocery Delivery

If you would like to order keto-specific groceries online and have them delivered to your office or home, check out Spud or Amazon. Both have great keto-friendly options and organize them in a way that makes online grocery shopping very convenient.

Which meal delivery service is best for Keto?

Personally, I am a fan of HelloFresh for their ordering convenience, flavourful and easy-to-follow recipes, and because they are the lowest-priced meal kit on the list. They also rotate their menu often enough that there are enough keto-specific items to keep me interested. As for meal prep, LiveFitFoods is a personal favourite because of their extensive keto meal selection and cleanse option!
